Roorkee, Uttarakhand — Personal records of more than 30,000 current and former students and alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT-Roorkee) were reportedly accessible on a public website for years, exposing mobile numbers, email addresses, photographs and sensitive demographic fields including caste and financial-background details.

According to reporting first published by The Times of India, the searchable website allowed anyone to retrieve a record simply by entering a student’s enrolment number, which investigators say suggests the data originated from IIT-Roorkee academic affairs records rather than being voluntarily published.

The leaked fields reportedly included contact numbers, email IDs, photographs, caste category and financial-background information — items that privacy experts say materially increase the risk of targeted scams, discrimination and identity fraud when combined.

Multiple news outlets report the archive was publicly accessible for several years and that older records were still being updated on the exposed site, raising concerns that the exposure persisted unnoticed for an extended period.
