Just after 8 AM in Mott Haven, a neighborhood in the Bronx, NYC, a building partially collapsed due to a gas explosion. There have not been any reports of injuries.
There was a blast around 8:10 in the incinerator shaft at 207 Alexander Avenue, according to the fire department. Gas in the building has been shut off, 40 apartments were evacuated, and a canine rescue squad assisted in the search of the building. The cause is unknown, but a gas leak is suspected.
A spokesperson for the NYCHA, who owns the building, said apartments will all be inspected and that tenants may be relocated.
Mayor Eric Adams posted about the event to his Twitter now X, account. A stop work order was placed on the building in June 25 by the Buildings Department. There are anticipated traffic delays around 135th street and Alexander Avenue. Residents at the nearby P.S. 154 Jonathan D. Hyatt Elementary School were able to hear the blast.
