Youtuber Daniel Rotar was switching to a connecting flight when he noticed that his Samsung smart ring had swollen to a degree that he could not take it off of his finger. This forced him to visit a hospital to have it removed.
Rotar, who goes by ZONEofTECH on Youtube, was flying back from Hawaii at the time. He posted on social media regarding the swelling ring, asking for advice but not receiving any he could act on. When Rotar tried to board his connecting flight, he was not allowed on board for safety issues. A similar thing had happened regarding the Samsung Note 7, which was banned from all flights in October 2016.
Many theories exist for why the ring swelled up, which Samsung maintains is a rare occurance. Rotar sites high heat, salt water, multiple flights, and an already failing battery. Samsung recommends always rinsing the ring with clean water and wiping it off before using it.
After the incident, Rotar posted photos of his finger, which appeared injured, but he stated he thought it would heal. Samsung has said they are currently investigating the incident.
The incident has caused a good deal of negative feelings toward and fear of smart rings regarding their safety.
