On Sunday, United States President Donald Trump has announced that the US is imposing a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz to prevent other countries trading with Iranian ports in the area and to further weaken the Iranian regime. According to the US Central Command, the blockade will start at 10:00AM ET (5:30PM IRST).
Trump announced the blockade via a Truth Social post. “Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the finest in the world, will be blockading any and all ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump declared. The blockade occurs in the aftermath of failed peace talks between the United States and Iran over the weekend in Islamabad. Oil prices have increased to over $100 a barrel in the aftermath of news of the blockade, and gas prices have also increased.
Iran has dismissed the blockade, with parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf scoffing at the blockade in an X post. Ghalibaf sarcastically told Americans to “enjoy the current pump figures” and stated that with the “so-called blockade,” Americans would be “nostalgic for $4-$5 gas.” He further denied that the blockade would impact Iran and stated that it would retaliate if the United States escalated.
