United States President Donald Trump has demanded the “unconditional surrender” of Iran as the United States and Israel continue to strike Iran. Trump has stated that once Iran chooses “acceptable” leadership, the US and its allies would make them “economically bigger, better, and stronger than ever before.”
The United States and Israel’s war against Iran has been going on for a week. Iran, in retaliation for the attacks, has bombed Middle Eastern countries holding US bases, such as Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman. Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, has stated that the war will likely last four to six weeks. Trump has demanded new leadership in Iran that does not involve terrorists or radical anti-Americans.
Trump has compared his attack on Iran to the US raid on Venezuela earlier this year, which led to the capture and imprisonment of US President Nicolas Maduro. Trump has notably avoided using the term “regime change” to describe his intervention in Iran, not wanting to associate it with interventions by previous presidents that he criticised, such as the War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War.
