On Friday, the International Warning Asteroid Network notified the public that an asteroid the size of a football field had a greater than 1% chance of striking earth in the year 2032.
The agency was established in 2013 to “keep scientists on alert.”
The asteroid is called 2024 YR4.
NASA JPL Center for NEO Studies Director Paul Chodas said, “[the likelihood of the asteroid impacting earth] could fall to zero almost any day now […] but we don’t know that.”
He also said they are running out of time to observe the asteroid, and that they would not be able to avoid it until 2028.
The magager of the IAWN is named Tim Spahr.
