Italy secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Belgium in their opening match of the Women’s European Championship 2025. Arianna Caruso scored the only goal just before halftime, curling a shot toward the upper nearby corner after being set up by Lucia Di Guglielmo. This goal gave Italy a vital advantage in a competitive Group B, which is expected to be topped by World Cup winner Spain.
Player of the match Caruso tested the Belgian defense with several early efforts during the opening 20 minutes, after the game commenced with a minute’s silence in memory of Portuguese national team striker Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident.
Italy’s victory over Belgium at the Women’s Euro 2025 served as a form of revenge, having been defeated by Belgium during the group stage of Euro 2022. Before this match, Italy had suffered three consecutive losses to the Belgian Red Flames. Arianna Caruso netted the only goal just before halftime, securing a 1-0 win for Italy and marking their first triumph in the European Championship for Women since 2017. This win holds great importance for Italy’s hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds, a feat they have not accomplished since 2013. In contrast, Belgium’s 1-0 victory over Italy in Euro 2022 had propelled them to the quarter-finals for the first time, but in this 2025 encounter, Italy managed to turn the tables.
