A woman has died in Colorado after a suspected mountain lion attack, according to authorities.
It was the state’s first similar encounter since 1999.
Her body was found on Thursday by two hikers on the Crosier Mountain Trail in Larimer County. They said they saw a mountain lion “lying partially over her body,” according to USA Today. They successfully scared the lion away by hurling rocks at it.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife was brought to the fore of the search for the mountain lion. Other agencies helped. Helicopters were involved. They shot the mountain lion, but it ran away. They were later able to locate it. They euthanized it. A second lion was also located an euthanized. Colorado Parks and Wildlife mandates that wild animals be euthanized if they attack humans.
Necropsies were said to have been scheduled on both carcasses to check for rabies and avian influenza.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife said they didn’t know if one or multiple mountain lions were involved in the attack.
As of Saturday, the victim’s identity had yet to be released by the Larimer County Coroner.
