The United Nations Security Council convened to discuss the escalating humanitarian conditions in Gaza. The meeting, requested by 10 elected members, focused on concerns that the severe humanitarian crisis in the region is being overshadowed by broader geopolitical developments.
During the session, it was highlighted that nearly 1,000 Palestinians have lost their lives since October 2025, with the vast majority of Gaza’s population displaced. The existing ceasefire, in effect since October 2025, was noted as being largely on paper.
UN Aid Chief Tom Fletcher emphasized that the “fragile gains” achieved post-ceasefire represent only the “bare minimum” of what Palestinians require. The discussion underscored the urgent need for sustained humanitarian assistance and protection for civilians in the besieged enclave.
