The United Nations (UN) mission has reported that the number of civilian deaths in Ukraine reached its highest level in four years during May. This increase highlights the impact of intensified conflicts on civilian populations in affected areas.
According to data released by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, numerous civilians lost their lives as a result of clashes and attacks in May. The figures indicate the highest monthly civilian casualty rate recorded since 2020.
Mission officials stated that the primary reasons for the rise in civilian casualties include intense artillery fire, airstrikes, and ground combat. Civilians residing in settlements close to the front lines were particularly emphasized as being at significant risk.
The UN has called on all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law and protect civilians, drawing attention to the devastating impact of conflicts on civilian populations. Efforts are ongoing to fully verify the casualty figures, it was stated.
