The United Nations Security Council is set to convene an emergency meeting to address the escalating situation in Ukraine. The session comes in response to a significant missile and drone assault launched by Russia against multiple Ukrainian cities in the early hours of May 23-24. This offensive has been described by Kyiv as the most devastating to date.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged for an end to the violence, stating, “The time for peace is now.” He addressed ambassadors following the recent attacks, emphasizing the urgent need for de-escalation.
Disagreements among Council members are anticipated. European nations are expected to call for an immediate ceasefire, while Russia maintains that its strikes are solely targeting military infrastructure. Moscow has also issued further threats of sustained attacks.
