Bangkok’s acclaimed Jhol restaurant, a fixture in the Michelin Guide, recently presented a memorable culinary journey in Gurugram. Hosted at The Leela Ambience, the pop-up event showcased the diverse coastal flavors of Indian cuisine under the expert guidance of Chef Shreesha Rao. Jhol is renowned for its contemporary interpretations inspired by India’s extensive coastline, and the seven-course tasting menu offered at the event underscored the restaurant’s prestigious reputation.
The evening commenced with inventive appetizers such as Chicken Liver Achu Murukku, served with a tangy dry mango chutney that struck a perfect sweet and sour balance. Kolkata Dim’er Devil offered a unique twist on familiar tastes, incorporating rich textures for a distinct palate experience.
Following the starters, Berhampur Fried Chicken, inspired by Odisha’s coastal traditions, provided a crispy yet simple, satisfying option. Surati Anda Ghotala, a flavorful cheese toast enriched with grated cheese and truffle shavings, emerged as another highlight.
A standout dish of the night was the Ghee Roast Crab. Presented within a crab shell, the Kanchipuram-style idli was generously filled with crab meat and accompanied by coconut chutney. This visually stunning and delicious creation was hailed as one of the year’s most memorable culinary experiences.
The main courses featured Alleppey Fish Curry, a comforting and soulful fish curry served with matta rice, offering a hearty taste of Kerala. The Malabar Lamb Shank, slow-cooked to perfection, was paired with kallappam and beans poriyal, adding a unique dimension to the meal with its authentic Kerala accompaniment.
For dessert, the traditional Indian delicacy, tender coconut payasam, was balanced with a sesame crisp and mango sorbet. The rich and creamy payasam provided a delightful conclusion to the dining experience.
Jhol’s consistent presence in the Michelin Guide is a testament not only to its technical excellence and beautiful presentation but also to the narrative woven into each dish. Chef Shreesha Rao and his team successfully transported diners to the varied coastlines of India, offering an unforgettable gastronomic adventure through a modern culinary lens.
