In a statement released Saturday, Council members voiced concerns over impending mass atrocities and urged the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to immediately cease their assault on El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state.
The Council also expressed deep concern over escalating violence across Sudan, where conflict has raged between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF since mid-April 2023.
Escalating Violence Worsens Humanitarian Crisis
The statement highlighted reports of escalating clashes in the Kordofan states, warning that this trend risks further deteriorating an already dire humanitarian situation.
Members called for an immediate cessation of hostilities by all parties.
They reiterated the obligation of all parties to protect civilians, adhere to international law, particularly international humanitarian law, and uphold their commitments under the Jeddah Declaration.
The leaders of the warring parties signed an agreement in the Saudi capital in May 2023, which included crucial measures such as facilitating the safe delivery of humanitarian aid and protecting civilians.
Drone Strikes, Accountability, and Aid Access
Council members also conveyed alarm over reports of RSF drone strikes in El Obeid and an increase in drone attacks across Sudan by parties to the conflict.
They called for the investigation of all abuses and violations, demanding accountability for perpetrators.
The Council reminded all parties to permit and facilitate safe and unhindered humanitarian access in accordance with international law, and to allow for the safe passage of civilians.
The body urged all UN Member States to refrain from external interference that could fuel the conflict and instability, to support efforts toward lasting peace, to abide by international law, and to implement relevant Security Council resolutions, including resolution 2791 (2025).
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, and reiterated its rejection of any parallel administration in areas controlled by the RSF.
