A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines on the first day of the new academic year, resulting in fatalities, according to initial reports.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the tremor’s epicenter was located off the coast of Mindanao island. The earthquake occurred at 06:37 AM local time and had a depth of 10 kilometers.
Early assessments indicate that at least 10 people lost their lives and over 100 others sustained injuries. Damage to buildings and infrastructure in the affected region has also been reported.
Authorities confirmed that search and rescue operations are ongoing, with additional teams being dispatched to the area. No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake, but residents have been advised to remain cautious.
